P.ink also known as Personal Ink is a non-profit organization founded in 2012. Breast cancer survivors often have to make a decision between reconstructing their breast or not after their mastectomy. Molly, a breast cancer survivor wanted to get a tattoo on her mastectomy scar and that was the light that inspired a group to create P.ink, to help others like her. Breast cancer survivors are often left with scarring on the breast and have no nipple. Most survivors do not follow through with reconstruction, therefore there leaving scarring in the area. It is a scar they have to live with and for some, it can be unbearable to see everyday. To be reminded of something so traumatic can be hard. Although the beauty in women will always be present with or without a mastectomy scar, those who decide to get a tattoo to cover up these scars are finding a way of healing from this experience from tattoo artists in a way that no one else can.
The tattoo artists for P.ink understand that breast cancer survivor’s do not want to be reminded when they look at themselves in the mirror of something so painful. Covering up the scars with a tattoo is a way for the patient to reclaim their bodies and feel beautiful again. It shines a different light and changes the image of the scarring. It helps survivors’ like Molly redesigns her body the way she wants.
